What is a codec?
Codec is an acronym for Coder/Decoder. This device compresses (for transmission) and decompresses (once received) digital video and analog audio signals so that they occupy less bandwidth during transmission. It is used in applications such as remote broadcast-quality voiceovers recorded in a remote studio and transmitted via codecs and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) lines to a central studio for final mixing.
What is bandwidth?
The effective carrying capacity of a telecommunications transmission medium. Bandwidth describes how much information can be pushed through an electronic "pipe" at any given time. In analog systems, it is the difference between the highest frequency that a channel can carry and the lowest, measured in hertz. In digital systems the unit of measure of bandwidth is bits per second. For instance, a voice transmission by telephone requires a bandwidth of about 3000 cycles per second (3KHz). A TV channel occupies a bandwidth of 6 million cycles per second (6 MHz) in terrestrial Systems. In videoconference based systems a larger bandwidth of 17.5 to 72 MHz is used to spread or "dither" the television signal in order to prevent interference.
What is H.320 and H.323?
H.320 is a suite of ITU (International Telecommunications Union) recommendations specifying technical requirements for narrow-band visual telephone systems and terminal equipment, typically for videoconferencing over switched digital services such as ISDN, fractional T1, and Switched 56. It can be a video system's sole compression method or supplementary algorithm, used instead of a proprietary algorithm when two dissimilar codecs have need to interoperate. H.320 includes a number of individual recommendations for coding, framing, signaling and establishing connections. It also includes audio algorithms (G.721, G.722, G.728), framing, signaling and establishing connections (H.221, H.230, H.321, H.242, H.261).
H.323 is an International Telecommunications Union (ITU) standard describing protocols, services and equipment for multimedia communication over Internet protocols (IP). The standards cover three types of media: audio, video and data. Communication may occur over a corporate LAN, or over the Internet. H.323 specifies several new standards to allow for communications between terminals on IP networks.
What are the Benefits of H.323?
H.323 is especially beneficial for companies that have computers connected to a WAN, printers or other enterprise infrastructure equipment and are using Intranets. Many customers who are in such a position now have the choice of running videoconferencing over IP or ISDN, enabling them to reduce costs and maximize their utilization of equipment and network. Standards-based H.323 solutions enables high-quality, easy to use, IP-based videoconferencing over the LAN and corporate Internet. Automatic IP/ISDN dialing ensures that the system will detect whether the user is making an IP or ISDN call. In addition, "On the Fly" network selection allows either IP or ISDN networks to be used at the touch of a button, without having to reboot or reconfigure the system.
